From the earliest times the Mordvins gather for the festival “White birch” to demonstrate their sport daring and sportsmanship. Sport competitions, national fight on the belts, occupied a special place in the festival. From of old a lot of peoples have national kinds of fighting which rules are alike in many respects: the fighters stand in a groin hold and holding a rival by the hand try to throw him to the ground. Usually such duels took place at folk festivals. Since recently the fight on the belts has been an official sport. Most competitions are held under the aegis of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization).
