The Southern Khanty Embroidery23.08.2010, 21:17 — administratorThe Southern Khanty lived on the banks of the rivers Irtysh, Konda and Demianka. By late 19th - early 20th centuries they were totally assimilated by the Russians. Only household items, clothes and utensils kept in various museums of the south and north of the Tyumen region remain from the traditional culture of this ethnographic group, as well as folklore recorded by Russian and foreign investigators of the 17th – 20th centuries, including Finno-Ugric scientists of the abroad. The embroidery was used when making blouses, dressing gowns, headscarves, and mittens. Men’s shirts and trousers were also decorated. According to the ethnographers’ data, the front part and sleeves of the most ancient shirts were totally covered with embroidery. There were five types of embroidery. Since the 1990’s the Ural and Khanty-Mansi Centers of Crafts have been reconstructing the Southern Khanty embroidery.
