The national park of Nuuksio, one of the finest preserves in Finland, is located in a half-hour trip from Helsinki. It occupies the territory of forty-five square kilometers. It was founded quite recently - in 1994. Since then the National Park of Nuuksio is visited by 100 thousand people annually.

The national park of Nuuksio is proud of having the very Finnish landscapes which Finland is so famous for. No wonder that until the late 1990’s the nature there remained virgin and intact: it was protected by impassable bogs and rocky relief.

Because of its steep rocks and inaccessible corners, the territory of Nuuksio is not suitable for agriculture. Situated in the vicinity of the capital, the backwoods of Nuuksio are inhabited by the steady populations of lynxes, deer, bears, birds and water-fowls. Mushrooms and berries grow here in abundance. But the main thing about Nuuksio is that a great number of unique species of endangered plants, birds and animals are preserved here. A flying squirrel, extinct in Europe and entered in The Red Book of Finland, is considered to be the symbol of the National Park.

There are about forty small lakes and ponds on the territory of the National Park. The nature of this place is indescribably marvelous: wild rocks, flourishing groves, marshy hollows and lichened boulders. Picturesque routes are highly cultivated, there are planked walkways on the marshes, small bridges over the ditches, and there are even steps in some places.
