Karelian authorities set aside quotas for Vepsa peoples along the shores of Äänisjärve for catching specific species of fish. Individuals or groups must submit an application for the quotas in advance. About this reported  FennoUgria Asutus.

Vepsa residents of the villages Shoutjärve and Shoksha may now legally fish for salmon, whitefish, zander, vendace and osmerus.

Other fish including Northern pike, burbot, bream and European perch may be fished for using traditional nets measuring up to 50 meters long and three meters high.

Russian laws provide for the designation of indigenous fishing locations and quotas; according to law, these peoples must be able to preserve their traditional ways of life.
