The city of Sortavala17.08.2010, 10:27 — administratorThe unique Finnish architecture of the late 19th – early 20th century has remained in the city. The city is important in terms of the relations between Russia and Finland. Sortovala is one of those cities that were on the ancient trade route well-known as Trade route from the Varangians to the Greeks. As a matter of fact, at that time it wasn’t a city but an ancient settlement (then – churchyard), and was named Serdovol. In 1632, having become a city, it was given a new name of Sordovala, then the first name was returned to it, and in 1918 the city was given its current name. In the total, the city belonged to ancient Karelians, Swedes, Finns and Russians. Once it was totally burned. If we don’t consider the city’s past, we will see that now Sortovala is a quiet town with an intricate planning – almost every square is triangle. Besides, the town is a paradise for those who are interested in the architecture style named “Finnish Romanism”. However, the main sight of Sortovala is inimitable in its beauty nature and the largest European Lake Ladoga. Sources: Newspaper "News of Karelia"
