Perhaps, there is not more mysterious place on the map of the Beloyarsky district (Khanty-Mansi autonomous area, Russia) than the area of the Numto Lake. Lake Numto translated from Khanty means “Heavenly” or ‘God’s lake”. Since long ago it has been one of the main Khanty and Nenets sainted places. According to the legend, the lake is an animate being – a man who has a wife – the Pyakuto Lake. In the center of the lake there is a Saint island, where all sacrificial rites are conducted and where women have never come.

The state natural park “Numto” was organized in 1997. Its area of about 800 hectares has a key meaning in geography, ecology and ethnography of the Tumen North. The park is located at the border of Khanty-Mansi autonomous area and Yamal-Nenets autonomous area, at the main watershed in the central part of the Siberian ridges.

Now as in the old days hunters, fishermen and reindeer breeders live in Numto and its environs.
