Traditional culture of northern peoples has been forming for centuries and was at most adapted to the natural conditions of their habitation. The Day of the reindeer-breeder is an annual celebration connected with the household work of the indigenous people.

Since 2004 the celebration devoted to the Day of the reindeer-breeder, hunter and fisherman is being held every April in Kogalym. The preparations to the festival begin right after the New Year holidays: they make harnesses for the reindeer’s competition, souvenirs for the trade exhibition, the skillful seamstresses sew new costumes for the contest.

In spite of the cold weather, the locals and guests of the town take part in the celebration with great pleasure because they can not only plunge into the atmosphere of the Khnaty way of life (to get acquainted with the interior of the Khanty chum, to taste the national dishes), but also become a witness of a very picturesque sight: competitions in the national kinds of sport, the national costumes show and, of course, a unique national colour conveyed in the amateur talent activities of the Khanty people.
