Norwegian cops will speak Sami

The Department of Justice and Emergencies of Norway met Norwegian Sami peoples’ long-term requests halfway. The requests were about rise standards in proficiency in the Sami language and acquaintance with the Sami culture among local policemen. The Sami parliament of Norway (SPN) sain about it. 

“Even if people who quite good speak Sami and know with the Sami culture changed, it was the problem of its use exactly in the Sami regions. One reason of it, that it was impossible to understand how one could find and get those people for filling of proper vacant positions”, - the president SPN Egil Olli explained.

According to his words, the Sami parliamentary soviet (the body of cooperation, created by the Sami parliaments in Norway, Sweden and Finland) asked to start with setting order of placement of personnel with the Sami language and culture knowledge at positions n the territories of traditional Sami residence. 

In conclusion, the Department of Justice of Norway published the official explanation, in which it was said that while filling the vacant placement one can underline at the same time the necessity of proficiency in the Sami language and the Sami tradition for candidates and meet them halfway if they correspond to the demands. This approach is recommended after holding the proper public analysis in the region. “It is welcome news, that the Department of Justice and Emergences serious approached the question and agreed with the idea, that proficiency in the Sami language and culture can be needed at the Sami territories” – E. Olli noted.

The local police play the main role during analyses of emergent situations among other government bodies. It has also access to the local authorities and works with information. “It is very important for the guarantee the Sami people’s interests in jus to have policemen with knowledge of the Sami language and culture at the Sami territories” – the SPN president underlined.
