Ingrian Finns have released an encyclopedia of their prominent relatives

In Suomi at the end of May, the book “Inkeriläiset. Kuka kukin on?” (“Ingrians: who’s who?”) saw light. The 400 page encyclopedia explains in Finnish language about prominent Ingrian Finns, as well as biographies of prominent Votics, and Izhorians living the historical region of Ingermanland – there are around 2000 biographies in the book.

Aleksey Kryukov, Ingrian Finn Society “Inkerin Liito” activist, and editor of the newspaper Inkeri explained to the FINUGOR Infocenter that the idea to create the “Ingrian Encyclopedia” originally came up almost 30 years ago. The real drivers behind the writing of this book were Pekka Vikberg and Helena Miettinen from the Inkerin Kulttuuriseura (Ingrian Culture Society in Finland),” he noted.

Vikberg, Miettinen, Kryukov and the first chairman of the “Ingrian Union of Karelian Finns,” Ivan Mullonen became the main authors of the encyclopedia; there exists a number of authors who wrote from 1-2 pages. A. Kryuokov himself wrote about Inkeri in Russia, and sections on Ingrian Finns in Estonia and Sweden. “Ivan Mullonen wrote about Ingrian Finns living in Karelia. Pekka Vikberg wrote about several public figures from the time of Finnish emigration in 1918. Helena Miettinen wrote about everything she knew,” clarified the activist.

In the book you can find, for example, a biography on prominent Izhorian rune interpreter, Larin Paraska, and Ingrian poet, translator, dramaturge and theater critic, member of Finnish Academy of Sciences Aale Maria Tünin-Haavio, writer and utopian Matti Kurikka and many others. Information is provided about Ingrians born in Ingermanland, Inkeri who emigrated to other countries and regions, as well as victims of deportation.

Inkerin Kulttuuriseura received a grant for the preparation and publication of this book. 2000 copies were published.
