On September 11, members of the Education, culture, sports and youth affairs Committee of Carelian Legislative assembly supported the address of Carelian general public to the leadership of the republic about the situation with “Carelia” magazine. Deputies didn’t give a chance to speak to defenders of the eldest Finnish-language magazine, whose number of editions may now be reduced from 10 to only 2 issues per year. Elected officials didn’t even listen to the representative of the Ministry of national policy, vesti.karelia.ru reports.
“The problem was already solved in a positive way, - said the deputy of Legislative assembly Alexey Gavrilov. – The general public should be satisfied”.
But defenders of “Carelia” magazine didn’t share deputy’s complacent mood and have already sent appeals to the president of Russian Federation and to the head of the republic. Even though the working group consisting of representatives of different public organizations and executives unanimously carried the decision to save the normal regularity of magazine’s issues on September 3, the future of the edition is still vague.
“It’s too early to celebrate, - said the member of working group, famous Carelian journalist Natalya Meshkova. – The decision of the working group doesn’t have legal force. Magazinesubscription is taken to the half of the year and only for one issue. I don’t understand why nobody was heard out at today’s Committee meeting”.
According to magazine’s editor Robert Kolomainen, today even those who were supporting the reduction of the magazine now speak for keeping it. “Thereby, the necessity of conversationwith the head of the republic becomes more urgent, - saysKolomainen. – Everything depends on his position. Today’s uncertain state of the magazine demoralizes its readers and creative team”.
