Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District, the former president and a current chairman of the Council of Elders Association of Indigenous Peoples of the North, Siberia and Far East of the Russian Federation Sergey Kharyuchi proposed to dedicate the next Arctic forum to indigenous peoples of the North. He said this at the opening of the Forum "The Arctic is a territory of dialogue" in Salekhard on the 24th of September, reports the press service of the Legislative Assembly of the autonomous district.
A well-known polar explorer, the first Vice-President of the Russian Geographical society, a member of the Federation Council Artur Chilingarov supported the idea S. Kharyuchi’s idea. "Maybe we should think about the next forum indeed... The Yakuts claim, the Nenets claim, Naryan-Mar, Khanty-Mansiysk ... maybe we should hold a forum on "Indigenous and small people". Because we need a dialogue with them too in order to protect their interests,"- told A. Chilingarov to reporters.
The third Forum "The Arctic is a territory of dialogue" was held in Salekhard on the 24th-25th of September. The main theme of the forum were: cological safety, issues of public health in the region, juridical issues of environmental protection, probable scenarios of climate change and issues of cooperation in the elimination of environmental consequences of economic activities in the region. Forum "The Arctic is a territory of dialogue" has been held since 2010, it discusses the complex issues of exploration and development of the region . The first forum was held in September 2010 in Moscow and was devoted to the modern issues in the Arctic. The second forum was held in September 2011 in Arkhangelsk; the participants of the meeting discussed the formation of the Arctic transport system.
