The number of people wishing to learn Udmurt language has grown almost twice in Izhevsk

Udmurt’s language Courses in Izhevsk caused a remarkable agiotage. "It was only 5 groups, but now we have 9 groups studying Udmurt language. And people still go", - told Udmurtia’s nationalities affairs minister Larissa Buranova to journalists, reports ITAR-TASS.

She emphasized that the courses began this year, in September, and since that time language course interest from the side of language learners is tend to be increasing: a long queue of ready-to-study students has already been formed. Last year the courses were held for about five months. Now, according to L.Buranova, great requirements motivated teachers to develop a three months intensive course. Till the end of the year first groups shall finish their training, and in January of 2014 the next portion of students will be taught.

Now each group is formed by 20 students - representatives of different social groups: students, pupils, pensioners. According to L.Buranova, everyone who comes to learn Udmurt language has his own motive. Among the Udmurt language studying students you can recognize Udmurt people, who don't know their native language, but still would like to learn it; Russian youth is also a good guest here, we already can say that they have fallen in love with numerous ethno - events which are held in the republic; Women, married and changed their language field, are fond of these interesting events too.

Free lessons are being held in several point-districts across Izhevsk and Glazov. According to L.Buranova, popularity of courses is explained by a stable Udmurtian indigenous people’s culture and language promotion’s policy conducted in republic.

The Udmurt language, along with Russian, is a state language of Udmurtia. Komi language is the closest to Udmurt. According to 2010 census a number of people speaking Udmurt language in Russia is about 324 thousand people.
