On January 17, Petrozavodsk City Court dismissed a claim of Anatoly Grigoiev, Chairman of the public association “Karelian Congress”, against the publishing office of “Periodica” and the republican Ministry for National Policy, Relations with Public and Religious Organizations and Mass Media. This was reported by the “News of Karelia”.
Let us recall that A.Grigoriev demanded from the Ministry for National Policy of the republic and its subordinate publishing office to keep on publishing the literary and art magazine “Carelia” in Finnish in the same amount - 10 issues per year, as well as monetary compensation for moral damage that was caused to the leader of the “Karelian Congress” in his capacity as a magazine reader. It is noteworthy that although the claimant had assessed pecuniary damage caused in the amount of one million rubles before, during the claim hearing at court A.Grigoriev filed a motion to increase the amount of monetary compensation to three million: two million - from the Ministry and a million – from the “Periodica”.
As the leader of the “Karelian Congress” reported to the “News of Karelia” after the court session, he intends to appeal the verdict of the City Court at the Supreme Court of the Republic. And moreover, A.Grigoriev is going to require from defendants an even larger amount of monetary compensation - at least five million rubles.
Let us recall that last year the publishing office of “Periodica” decided to reduce publication of the “Carelia” magazine in Finnish from ten to two issues. Chairman of the public association “Karelian Congress” considered such a decision to be violating his rights as the magazine consumer, reader and subscriber. In addition, according to the public activist, the reduction of the “Carelia” publication violates not only the regional law on support of the Karelian, Veps and Finnish languages, but also interstate agreement “On the fundamentals of relations between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Finland” dated 1992.
