I Cheremisskaya war started on 20th December, 1552, and ended on May, 1557. There were three Cheremissky wars during the XVI century. II Cheremisskaya war flared up in the spring of 1572. III Cheremisskaya war went on during the 80th years of XVI century. The result of these wars - the general weakening of Russian state.
After the overthrow of Kazan the voevode B.I.Saltykov was appointed in this city by grand prince Ivan Vasilevich. Maris began to pay jasak to the the new government.
The annals inform, that over 10 thousand enemies of Russia, including the prince Janchura Izmailtjanin and Alec-hero, have been killed during the I Cheremisskaya war which proceeded from 20th December, 1552 till May, 1557. The chronicle reports about physical destruction of a Mari top: ".princes Ivan Mstislavsky and Mihailo Vasilyevich Glinsky fought the meadow cheremis, grasped 1600 notable people, princes, murs, Tatar officials and killed all of them". Also, meadow Maris were suppressed by tsar's armies with the princes Kurbsky and Troekyrov at the head, which destroyed in 1555 almost all patrimonial top on the Meadow party.
After the insurrection of 1552 - 1557 the tsar's administration started to establish the rigid administratively-policeman control over the people of the Average Volga region, however at the beginning it managed to do only on the Mountain party and in immediate proximity from Kazan, while on the major parts of the Meadow party the administration power was nominal. The dependence of the local left-bank Mari population was expressed only that they paid a symbolical tribute and nominated the soldiers which were sent on Livonskaya war (1558 - 1583). Moreover, meadow and northwest Maris continued to make attacks on Russian territory, and local leaders actively came into contacts to the Crimean khan with the purpose of signing of the Antimoscow military union. Not casually II Cheremisskaya war (1571 - 1574) started at once after a campaign of the Crimean khan Davlet-Gireja, that had ended with the capture and burning of Moscow. The next armed attack of the people of the Volga region and Priuralja in 1581, had been caused by the same reasons as previous. The rigid administratively-police surveillance started to extend on the Meadow party (by setting to the local population of golov ("watchmen") - Russian people who were carrying out the control, partial disarmament, confiscation of horses). The Revolt began in Priuralje in summer, 1581 (the attack of Tatars, hantov and mansi on the estate of Stroganovy), then the disturbance threw to the left-bank Maris, soon the mountain Maris, the Kazan Tatars, Udmurts, Chuvashs and Bashkirs joined to them. Insurgents blocked Kazan, Svijazhsk and Cheboksary, made far campaigns in the depth of Russian territory - to Nizhni Novgorod, Hlynovy , Galich.
The insurgent movement of the meadow Maris which had begun practically right after the capture by Russian of Kazan was mass. On a mountain right bank this movement came to naught soon, but on the left coast the meadow Maris did not calm down during 30 years. This period the historians name «Cheremissky wars».
