The ethnic game of Kaomm pal (which means ‘the polar night’) is annually held in Monchegorsk, the Murmansk region.
It is held in order to promote the popularity of the culture of native people, the Lapps, and to support the ethnical direction of tourism and sport in Monchegorsk.
Since olden times there was a tradition: after the Polar night the Lapps greeted the sun and organized fairs, where the youth could demonstrate their adroitness and skills, find a match, the craftsmen exchanged their goods, and all the people could share the news and tell the fables. Nowadays the tradition has been revived, and besides, not only the Lapps can take part, but all the people interested.
The teams, taking part in the events, should consist of 4 members, and besides, at least one participant should be a woman.
The sports route has 3 laps:
The first lap is skiing race and felt-boot throwing;
The second lap is skiing race and lassoing the nominal antler;
The third lap is towing of the skier. New contests appear each year.
The competition enjoys a great popularity among the locals and guests of the town.
