The government of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug applies three principles in management of the arctic territory, IA «Sever-Press» reports.
They are: preservation of traditional economic activity and culture of indigenous ethnic minorities of the North, support of ecological security and development of scientific base, balance of interests of fuel and energy companies and indigenous ethnic minorities residing in Yamal.
The head of the arctic region Dmitriy Kobylkin declared about it within the panel discussion of the Gaidar Forum "Partnership in the Arctic: In Search of New Model of Interstate Cooperation in Times of Global Instability".
The ecological expedition to Beliy Island situated in the Kara Sea became a bright example of responsible approach to protection of the Arctic from the side of local population, bodies of the power and business. 700 tons of metal scraps were collected during 3 years of fulfillment of ecological activities on the island. Completely the island will be cleaned till 2017, it will become the open scientific and research platform. In the prospect it is planned to increase scientific infrastructure, as Dmitriy Kobylkin notes. Also he expresses confidence that science should go before industrial development of the Far North.
In Yamal big attention is paid to providing of ecological security of the territory. According to the information given to IA "Sever-Press" in the press-service of the governor of Yamal, not a single industrial project in the region is fulfilled without conformity to the strictest ecological standards. Besides, in order to protect traditional way of life of indigenous northerners all the projects pass through the procedure of public hearings with participation of representatives of tundra communities.
Today 15 grounds of ecological monitoring work in Yamal. 79 thousand of 770 thousand square kilometers have status of specially protected natural territories, in other words 11 percent of the whole territory of the region. To understand: this area is equal to the territory of a middle-size state in Europe.
In agreements about cooperation with companies that work on the territory of the region the government of Yamal pays big attention to interests and needs of local population. Trading stations, processing complexes, objects of transport and social infrastructure are built, and scientific projects are developed in joint efforts.
