Andres Kheinapuu: “We need the Internet for transmitting the language to new Finno-Ugric generations”

A member of the international advisory commission of Finno-Ugric peoples and activist of Finno-Ugric movement Andres Kheinapuu gave the correspondent of Finno-Ugric Media Center FINUGOR.RU his opinion on the necessity of using the Internet by Finno-Ugric peoples.

According to A. Kheinapuu, the presence of Finno-Ugric languages in the Internet is necessary as the Internet is becoming the main tool of getting information for young people. Thus, this infomedia is becoming a very important tool for transmitting the language to the next generation. Without Internet the language is the language of old people which die with them.Besides, Andres Kheinapuu stated that language functioning proceeds much easier and cheaper in the Internet than in any other kind of media. That’s why the Internet suits small speech communities living separately very well. Most of Finno-Ugric peoples are of this type.

“Active members of Finno-Ugric movement should fill up the contents of websites in their own languages – the appropriate sections in Wikipedia, YouTube, make up and maintain their own blogs. Eventually, they should fill Facebook with Finno-Ugric languages”, - A. Kheinapuu said.
