Vasiley gazh is a republican amateur composer festival of contemporary Komi songs. The festival is traditionally held in the village of Ust-Kulom on Old New Year’s Eve, on the day of Vasiliy (Komi name – Vasiley lun). The festival got its name after its initiators, the Komi composers - Vasiliy Lodygin, Vasiliy Gushin and Vasiliy Chuviurov.
The year of 1994 is the festival’s birth date as the original regional festival. Since 1995 “Vasiley” has got the status of republican and is held as a contest. The festival’s mission is to develop Komi singing art and promote the art of Komi musicians becoming a good starter for musicians –beginners. Pop, folk and children songs, performed in “Vasiley” enrich the repertoire of amateur groups with interesting compositions giving new life to national traditions.
The most popular of them are performed on every republican festival not only by amateur groups but also by professional singers such as Lidia Loginova, Alphia Korotaeva, state dancing and singing group of the Komi Republic “Asia Kyya” and other art groups.
The festival “Vasiley” is a real smithy of new Komi songs, the Olympus, where new singing and composing stars of the Komi appear.
Winners in different nominations are chosen in the contest. The jury consists of eminent composers of the Komi Republic. Scenarios and best songs performed on the “Vasiley” are published in separate collections.
