Leaders of the Finno-Ugric and Samoyed peoples will be selected throughout the world. International contest to determine the most unusual and popular attractions of the Uralic language family has started on the Internet.
According to the editor-in-chief of the Media Center FINUGOR.COM Yuriy Popov, the main goals of the project is promoting interest of Finno-Ugric and Samoyedic peoples in maintaining their ethnic identity, as well as promoting interest of other peoples of the world to Finno-Ugric ethnos, their cultural heritage, political and social development. “Everyone is welcome to propose for the action, but not Finno-Ugric peoples themselves, – he underlined. - Everyone can propose a nominee reckoned to be a leader or a outstanding person on the website of the action. Involved experts from Russia, Hungary, Finland and Estonia shall evaluate the proposed persons if they suit the contest”.
Public nomination of prominent Finno-Ugric and Samoyed leaders began on the site FINUGOR.COM on May, 16.

Each proposal should be supported by a short biography which can be complemented by photos, audio and video materials. Articles are accepted in English and Russian languages being the means of conversation of Finno-Ugric and Samoyedic peoples. Non-profit organization Fenno-Ugria (Tallinn) which is a partner of Media Center FINUGOR.COM in Estonia will help to create pages on the contest in Estonian language.
The international contest “Leaders of Finno-Ugric World” shall be carried out in 3 stages. In May-August the collection of proposals in eight nominations shall continue: legendary heroes from mythology and epic tales of Finno-Ugric and Samoyedic peoples; political, social, military and religious leaders until XXth century; modern political and social leaders; scientists; art workers; sportsmen; business leaders.
The nomination “The friend of Finno-Ugric peoples” is dedicated to persons not of Finno-Ugric origin but contributed a lot to the Uralic peoples.
At the second stage (September-October) persons of greatest interest from every people in each nomination shall be determined by public voting. At the final stage which started in early November, winners shall be selected by public voting: 7 persons presented in each nomination, which got the maximum number of votes. The official announcement of the action results shall be held in December, 2011. The project is being implemented by wide support of scientific institutions, public associations, mass media, and authorities of countries and regions.
